Galloway Tourist Route

Distance - 96miles/154km

See the story of runaway weddings in Gretna Green or of war time life at the Devil?s Porridge. Trace the footsteps of the National Bard, Robert Burns, in Dumfries and raise a toast in his favourite Inn. Discover the history of aviation or visit the first savings bank in the world ? there is definitely something for everyone on this classic driving trail.

Rugged mountains, heathland, hills and moorland, forests, lochs, rich farmland, a long coastline and breathtaking skies ? a spectacular and relaxing drive off the beaten track along quiet roads. This is the perfect trail if you have a passion for Scottish scenery, driving classic cars and Robert Burns. This route, stretching from Gretna to Ayr, links the Robert Burns attractions in both Dumfries and Ayr. En route, it gives the visitor an introduction to the relatively unfamiliar countryside of the Galloway Forest Park and the industrial heritage of the Doon Valley. Seek out the Old Blacksmith's Shop at Gretna Green, the award-winning Robert Burns Centre and Bridge House Museum in Dumfries, or the Carsphain Heritage Centre. The mild influence of the Gulf Stream sweeping across south west Scotland mean the gardens and nurseries along the route are often unexpectedly lush and bountiful. Stop off at Bridge End and Deanston nurseries to collect some specimens for your own garden. Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of colourful Threave Gardens, or ponder over the bloody history of Threave Castle, ancient stronghold of the "Black Douglas". The landscape in this next part of the trail has been an inspiration to artists for generations, and there are plenty of opportunities to view the results of their work and meet the craftspeople of today during your journey. Take in Gracefield Arts Centre, Designs Gallery or Castle Douglas Art Gallery, and visit the Clog and Shoe Workshop or Anne Hughes Pottery to pick up a souvenir of your trip.

If you haven?t gone far enough to quench that thirst for cruising in your vintage car then the Galloway Tourist Route connects with the Solway Coast Heritage Trail at Dalbeattie providing an opportunity to visit the abundance of castles, abbeys, gardens and harbours further west.
